The History

Good Hope Church has roots in the heart of the Methodist Movement in America. Early records dated August, 1848 tell of “The Good Hope Methodist Protestant Society”, which documented a membership of 111 persons of age 21 or older. Good Hope was a strong congregation, belonging to the Methodist Protestant tradition which emphasized the voice of the laity in the church’s work.

In 1859, the membership had grown to 169.

August 22, 1871, Good Hope voted to approve the merger of uniting with the Methodist Episcopal Church, South in December 1870 by the Virginia Methodist Protestant Church Conference, and the church was officially transferred. About the time of the merger the original smaller building was moved back and the present sanctuary was erected on the same site.

In 1902, it was remodeled with the addition of the vestibule and steeple, as well as interior redecorated.

In 1939, we became Good Hope Methodist Church as the northern and southern churches reunited.

In 1948, with continued growth, ground was broken for the present education wing behind the sanctuary.

In 1956, a nine-room brick parsonage was completed.

In June1958, Good Hope became a station appointment and the education building was remodeled to include new classrooms and a pastor’s study.

In 1962, a new social hall and kitchen were being built.

In 1968, we became Good Hope United Methodist Church as the Methodist united with the Evangelical United Brethren Church.

In 1987, a major addition to the social hall was completed.

In 1999, new siding was installed in honor of the church’s 150th Anniversary.

In 2002, a new parsonage was purchased.

In 2023 Good Hope United Methodist Church disaffiliated with the United Methodist Church and became Good Hope Methodist Church, an independent church.
